In an effort to provide ministers with additional practical experience to enhance their service skills in ministry, AIHC has joined forces with Baptist Memorial Hospitals to develop a clinical practicum for its credential candidates. The credential candidates are those individuals pursuing their license as ordained ministers and evangelist missionaries.
Purpose of Clinical Practicum
AIHC credential candidates have an opportunity to receive practical ministry experience by providing spiritual and compassionate support to patients and their families in a clinical setting.
The practicum would enable candidates to develop their listening and interpersonal skills, increase their competence to serve in this capacity, and encourage self-reflection.
Credential Candidates, completing their clinical practicum, will serve as volunteer chaplains under the supervision of professional chaplains.

Clinical Practicum Experience
The clinical practicum experience will consist of at least fifteen hours. The completion of this practicum can range from six weeks to three months. We asked that the practicum last no more than three months for the purpose of retaining the information received through basic training. Each candidate will train as a volunteer chaplain and will work under the supervision of a professional chaplain within a hospital setting.
The practicum experience as a volunteer chaplain will consist of the following:
Two Hours of Volunteer Orientation: Student interns will receive two hours of orientation before the start of their volunteer service. The student interns will be orientated on the hospital's mission and expectations that will enable them to navigate the basic policies and procedures while on the premises.
Two Hours of Basic Instruction: Student interns will receive basic training on how to serve in a hospital setting. This training will include the do's and don'ts of hospital visits.
Clinical (Hospital Visits)
First Hour: A tour of the entire hospital, exposing and familiarizing student interns with the different areas that will allow them to see a wide range of ministry opportunities.
Second Hour: The volunteer chaplain will shadow his or her assigned chaplain.
Third Hour: The supervised chaplain will shadow the volunteer chaplain.
Six hours: The student interns will complete six hours of solo visits. It is not advisable for them to complete those hours in one setting. The solo visits will be distributed over a period of time designated for this practicum. The assigned chaplain will conduct a time of reflection for the student interns after the completion of the hospital visits.
Final Hour: Mutual evaluation and feedback between the supervised chaplain and the volunteer chaplain/s
